Celebrating the 75th birthday of a lens: Leitz Summar in Radevormwald-Dahlerau

A couple of days ago I realized that my ancient Ernst Leitz Summar (2/50mm) must be almost exactly 75 years old now. So I took it out to celebrate its "birthday" with a series of photographs. Technically speaking this nice lens has several shortcomings: It is soft, it flares easily and it delivers a very unusual rendering of unsharp backgrounds (giving them what is often called the "Summar swirl"). Photographically speaking this lens is very interesting because it definitely has "character". My copy is completely uncoated (although Leitz offered a service to coat the lenses later). The front element of the Summar is made from an infamous soft glass and scratches easily. Happily the glass of my sample still looks unharmed so far.

It is a pleasure to use on a Leica M3 because the combination of the M3’s fantastic finder and the Summar’s useful focusing tab is extremely comfortable.
